Low Consumption Wide Area Network (LPWAN), one of the Internet of Things communications, it is the research hot topic in the world. It has the features including wide scope of coverage, low cost of service, low consumption of power which can meet the data exchange in wide area range under the Internet of Things society situations. Wi-SUN(Wireless Smart Ubiquitous Network)technology is a open regulation based on IEEE802.15.4g, IEEE802 and IETF IPv6 standards. Wi-SUN FAN is a mesh network protocol with Ad-Hoc network function and self-healing function.

Wi-SUN transmission technology have the features including remote transmission, high security, high expandability, inter-connectable, easy building, Mesh network and low power consumption (the battery in Wi-SUN module have the possible to be used for more than 10 years) which make the module widely used in smart meter and Home Energy Management System (HEMS) controller and other communication devices. Wi-SUN Alliance was built at 2012, and now it has more than 250 members in the world like Cisco, ARM, TI, Itron. It has brought out more than 150 Wi-SUN certified product. At present, Wi-SUN Alliance members had deployed more than 9.5 million devices support Wi-SUN in the world. As it can combine the smart meters, smart lighters in one public network, Wi-SUN is widely used in utility services and intelligent city construction. The mission of Wi-SUN Alliance is to realize the interoperability in intelligent city and intelligent utility communication network by using open style international standard IEEE 802.15.4g, through test and certification to provide strong product connectivity with Wi-SUN ecosystem development

The Wi-SUN mesh network protocol can make each device to connect with adjacent devices which can make every node do the long-distance skip in the network. Usually, we can not have distance and speed both in hand, but Wi-SUN can be separately area arrangement and be complementary with other IoT technology through the combination of Mesh networking and automatic frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technology. It reduces the cost of building and operation. At present, Wi-SUN 1.0 maximum communication rate is 300 Kbps under FSK mode, and in the future, Wi-SUN 1.1 can reach 2.4Mbps under OFDM mode, it is the champion in the various free wireless frequencies.

Wi-SUN technology have the following three features: Interoperability, Ubiquitous & Scalable, Security. These are what Wi-SUN Alliance devoted to do.

When the Wi-SUN communication technology applied in smart meter, the customers can check the energy usage information and electric energy budget setting through Home Energy Management System controller matched APP. On the other hand, for power companies, they can accurately analyze power consumption and actively optimize energy management and control, both of which achieve energy-saving effects. Smart cities can use advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) or existing wireless communication infrastructure provided by street lighting networks to implement other applications, such as smart traffic signals, public traffic signs, smart parking lots, and electric vehicle charging stations.

Field Area Network

FAN is mainly used for facilities in large fields, such as smart grid, smart streetlight, etc., to connect public facilities to the same field network and realize interoperability.
