Chinese meter manufacturere are actively promoting development for higher-quality smart meters and AMI/AMR systems

According to relevant forecasts, the penetration rate of global smart meters will reach more than 50% in 2028. Investments from global utility companies to power grid intelligence, security and edge computing continue will keep grow. The global IoT and smart cities will be dominated by utility metering (electricity, gas and water).

Until now, the first round of full coverage upgrade and deployment of smart meters has been completed in China, and the replacement for the second-generation smart meters has begun. In the next few years, the Chinese market is expected to account for more than 70% of smart meters in Asia. And will continue to dominate the deployment of smart meters in Asia.
As Chinese power grid market has entered a stable period with limited demand for smart meters. Moreover, the SGCC has a limit on the maximum amount of bidders who won the tender (about 6% of the total bidding amount). For the above situation, the domestic market can no longer meet the needs of the sustainable development of electric meter companies.

At present, electricity meter companies are actively exploring the development of cross-domain diversified industries based on good job in the domestic grid electricity meter market. With the huge development space of international metering demand, the company has already deployed in all directions, and has already sent new performance growth points to overseas markets. At present, China’s exports of electricity, water and gas meters account for about 50% of the global market, and it has become a major exporter of meters.
At present, the price of domestic smart meters is relatively low, and the quality can reach the international medium-quality level, but they have not yet entered the international high-end meter market with mass productions. In order to increase the competitiveness of the international meter market, domestic meter companies are also actively promoting the produce for higher-quality smart meters and AMI/AMR systems. At present, domestic suppliers are exporting products and exporting semi-finished products for local assembly in import countries; building overseas factories or setting up joint ventures.
