Advanced Metering Infrastructure_–Core part of Smart Power Grid

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is an important part of smart power grid and one of the main differences between smart power grid and traditional power grid. It is an important product of the smart grid 2.0 era. AMI is a complete network and system for measuring, collecting, storing, analyzing and using customer electricity information.

AMI system architecture mainly consists of the following parts: AMI metering master station system equipment, data concentrator, communication channel, smart electricity meter and user’s indoor network.

AMI system has two major advantages, one is that the system has strong storage and analysis ability to deal with a large number of technical data, the other is the integration and sharing of information. AMI can provide real-time, quasi-real-time and non-real-time valuable basic data and integrated information to relevant power supply systems in a timely and accurate manner.

The AMI system is a system that uses smart meters to measure on-demand or in a set way through a variety of communication media, analyzes the user’s electricity consumption data, and provides open two-way communication. It is a technical information platform for smart grids. AMI is not a single technology application, but an integrated architecture that integrates existing and new power technologies, including home network systems for partial indoor control, smart metering, communication networks between metering devices and regional data concentrators, and data centers. Communication network, metering data management system and application of data in software platform.

Power users can specify power consumption strategies based on AMI data, and even provide power interaction services. The power supplier uses the rear system to collect and analyze AMI data to optimize system operation, provide economics and service levels. For example, AMI provides real-time information feedback when users lose power and power quality problems, so that power suppliers can quickly locate problems in the power grid.

At the same time, AMI’s two-way communication enables grid automation development. AMI provides sufficient system information to achieve optimal management of assets, rationally arrange equipment maintenance, adds and replacements. These can greatly improve the efficiency and reliability of the grid.
